Abstract: AMP-activated protein kinase(AMPK)acts as a cellular energy sensor, which can maintain energy stability by regulating metabolism. Under a low-energy circumstance, AMPK is activated, enhancing catabolism while inhibiting anabolism. This mechanism provides strong support for the production of ATP, ensuring that cells can efficiently utilizing resources to adapt to changes in environmental conditions in the face of energy stress. The role of AMPK in cancer is twofold: on the one hand, after AMPK is activated, it regulates the pathways of carbohydrate metabolism and lipid metabolism to keep the intracellular energy level stable, thereby curbing the proliferation and metastasis of cancer cells. On the other hand, AMPK plays a role in promoting the survival of cancer cells by regulating cancer metabolism and maintaining its energy stability. Here, we will deeply review the structure and biological function of AMPK, dual role of AMPK in cancer, aiming to bring new ideas and strategies for cancer treatment and diagnosis.
