Advances on supramalleolar osteotomy for varus ankle osteoarthritis

Abstract

Abstract: Supramalleolar osteotomy is an effective surgical approach for managing mid-stage varus ankle osteoarthritis. Specific techniques include medial opening-wedge osteotomy, lateral closing-wedge osteotomy, arc-shaped osteotomy, intra-articular osteotomy and tibial double-plane osteotomy. This review aims to summarize these techniques to assist surgeons in selecting the most appropriate procedure based on the severity of deformity and individual patient characteristics. Additionally, this article addresses current controversies and potential postoperative complications associated with supramalleolar osteotomy, providing insights that are valuable for both clinical practice and future research in the treatment of varus ankle osteoarthritis.
