Advances on zinc ions for spinal cord injury repair

Abstract: Spinal cord injury is a severe disorder of the central nervous system. The first injury directly damages tissue. Then these secondary problems, such as inflammation, oxidative stress, and poor nerve regeneration, lead to the loss of motor and sensory function in patients. Metal ions play essential roles in biological systems. Among them, zinc ions has attracted growing attention for its neuroprotective potential after the spinal cord injury. Zinc ions regulate multiple signaling pathways to reduce the severity of primary and secondary damage and promote neural function recovery. This review systematically summarizes recent research progress on zinc ions in the field of spinal cord injury, covering mechanisms of action, and therapeutic strategies. The goal of this review is to provide a theoretical basis and reference for their clinical translation and application.
