Investigation on prevalence rate of dental caries and status of related knowledge of pupils in a primary school in Baoding

Abstract: Objective To investigate the prevalence rate of dental caries of pupils in Baoding and know the status of caries awareness of prevention, so as to provide feasibility suggestion for pupils’ early prevention of caries. Methods By useing the method of group sampling, 1 441 children aged from 7 to 12 in a primary school in Baoding were examined and investigated separately.Results (1)There were 977 children had caries, prevalence rate was 67.80%. Prevalence rates of urban and rural were 65.96% and 75.94% respectively and were showed significant difference between them( χ2=9.900, P=0.002). The highest and lowest rates of caries were in the age groups 6-7 (71.95%) and 10-12(61.29%) respectively. (2) In the five questions of caries prevention, scores of urban pupils were higher than rural ones, those of girls were higher than boys, there were no significant difference between three age groups. Conclusion The current rate of dental caries of pupils is high, educational institutions and parents should take some effective measures according to the different characteristics such as town and countryside, gender and age to protect children’s teeth and decrease the rate of caries.
