Abstract: Icaritin, as a single active ingredient of the Chinese herbal medicine Epimedium, shows a wide range of pharmacological activities, such as anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, cardiovascular protection, bone protection and antioxidant, etc. Meanwhile, Icaritin has an inhibitory effect on different tumors through blocking the cell cycle, promoting apoptosis, metastasis inhibition and immunomodulation. This paper reviews the chemical composition of icaritin and the latest research progress at home and abroad in anti-tumor activity, non-anti-tumor pharmacological effects. This review focus on the chemical composition of icaritin and the latest research progress in anti/non-anti-tumor pharmacological effects to provide a theoretical basis for the further development of Epimedium and its precise clinical application.
