Abstract: Objective To investigate the current status of communication competence between undergraduate nursing students and the elderly and analyze the influencing factors. Methods A total of 364 nursing undergraduates from a medical college in Tianjin were selected by stratified sampling from December 2024 to January 2025. General information questionnaire, Self-Rating Scale of Communication Competence between Nursing Students and the Elderly, Extraversion-Introversion Personality Scale, and Emotional Intelligence Scale were used for the survey. Multiple linear regression analysis was adopted to identify the influencing factors of communication competence between nursing undergraduates and the elderly. Results The communication competence score of 364 undergraduate nursing students with the elderly was 80.05±8.43. The communication competence was positively correlated with the total score of emotional intelligence(P<0.01). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that whether having studied communication skills courses, personality traits, and emotional intelligence were the influencing factors of communication competence between undergraduate nursing students and the elderly(P<0.05), explaining 20.30% of the total variance. Conclusion The communication competence of nursing undergraduates with the elderly is at a medium to high level. Nursing educators should first clarify the relevant influencing factors of this competence, and then adopt appropriate intervention methods to further improve nursing students' communication ability with the elderly group.
